Access to the Big Bald summit by vehicle is a privilege that many property owners have been asking for. The Board of Directors of Wolf Laurel Roads and Security have been working closely with the U. S. Forest Service to permit those who cannot walk up to the Big Bald Summit to have vehicle access to the Summit. Part of the negotiation with the U.S. Forest Service that allowed for the reinstatement of this privilege was for WLRMS to make improvements to the roadway so that it is safe for vehicles and safeguards our natural heritage. One important road improvement specification was the creation of berms across the roadway to help prevent erosion. The required roadway improvements have been completed and approved by the Forest Service. The WLRMS Board is pleased to announce that vehicle access will begin May 27.

The U. S. Forest Service also set two other important requirements. The most significant requirement is that only licensed motorized vehicles with four-wheel drive may utilize the roadway. Over time the road conditions may get very rough due to usage and rainfall. A four-wheel drive vehicle usually has higher clearance and tougher tires. The likelihood of a four-wheel drive vehicle bottoming out and getting stranded or damaged is greatly reduced. Four-wheel drive vehicles also have adequate ground clearance to clear the new berms referenced above. Therefore, Security is not allowed to sign out the key to the access gate unless the property owner has a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Another requirement that must be followed stipulates that the staff of Roads and Securities is responsible to determine if the weather conditions will allow the road to be used. If it is raining or has rained recently, vehicles will not be allowed on the road until it has dried.

These two stipulations are in place to improve safety for all and keep our costs of maintaining the road to a minimum.

Access will be available seasonally May 15 to November 1. Please remember access to the Big Bald Summit is a privilege that WLRMS has been able to negotiate with the U.S. Forest Service. In order to insure we maintain this privilege, the rules and procedures must be strictly adhered to. If we don’t follow the rules and procedures, our access could be rescinded.

Please review the Rules and Procedures and the Agreement to be signed by any Property Owner who wants vehicle access. These documents will also be available at the Security Gate.
